The Oscar Predictor 2006 - Part 3
Reported by Kristen - 12:29 PM 2007.02.14
Well we’re back with another edition of the Oscar Predictor. Now that the Academy has released its list of nominees it is time to decide who has a chance at going home with a statue. This edition will deal with the more technical aspects again, whereas the final edition will have all the acting categories along with the coveted “Best Picture.” In this installment we’ll discuss who has the best chances along with the final nominees listed, how it differed from the last installment, and who will win the prize. Best Animated Feature Original Installment’s Predictions: “Cars,” “Happy Feet,” “Over the Hedge,” and “Monster House.” How We Differed: Well all the nominees mentioned in the last installment got nominations except for “Over the Hedge.” The Race: Well Disney remains in the race with “Cars” but it will have to go against the mega-hit “Happy Feet” which had a better story and greater box office revenue. It looks like “Monster House” could get cast aside as the fight narrows to the two bigger studios. If Sony comes through and ends up winning, it could be one of the biggest upsets this year for the Academy. My Personal Pick: Well my personal pick in the last installment, “Happy Feet” did get a nomination, and I would love to see it take home the gold. The Nominees: “Cars,” “Happy Feet” and “Monster House.” Overall Winner: Look for “Happy Feet” to take home the statue. Best Adapted Screenplay Original Installment’s Predictions: “The Departed,” “Little Children,” “Notes on a Scandal,” “Children of Men,” and “Dreamgirls.” How We Differed: Almost all the possible nominees listed in Part One took a nomination, except for one wildcard I didn’t see: “Borat.” The Race: Well with “Borat” coming out of nowhere to take a nomination home, this could come out predictable or through a monkey wrench into the cards. While “Borat” had a great writing style, it only seemed to be placed in this category since it came from “an idea” that was already written. Since there are three films based on novels the odds are in their favor, or “Borat” or “The Departed” could come out of nowhere to take the gold. I would put money on “Little Children,” which has already received a slew of nominations to edge out the competition. My Personal Pick: Out of all the nominees I would love to see love to see “Borat” or “The Departed” take home the statue. The Nominees: “Borat,” “Children of Men,” “The Departed,” “Little Children,” “Notes on a Scandal” Overall Winner: It’s a close race but look for “Little Children” to take the Oscar. Best Original Screenplay Original Installment’s Predictions: “The Queen,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Babel,” “Volver,” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.” How We Differed: Almost all the nominees got a nomination except for “Volver,” which got beaten out by one of our alternates “Letters from Iwo Jima.” The Race: This is another close race with many good choices and only one winner. It could come down to “The Queen” and “Little Miss Sunshine” like originally thought. Or, one of the lesser movies could edge out the two mainstays and take the Oscar. My Personal Pick: In terms of writing, “Little Miss Sunshine” did have a unique style that I would love to see win. The Nominees: “Babel,” “Letters from Iwo Jima,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,” and “The Queen.” Overall Winner: Sadly, I would say look for “The Queen” to come out on top and win this category. Come by for the next and final installment of the “The Oscar Predictor” where we’ll discuss the acting/directing categories and who could go home with “Best Picture!” And remember to watch the 79th Annual Academy Awards on ABC on February 25th.
