ENI Exclusive - Booboo Stewart talks Twilight Eclipse and More
Reported by Jack Quan - 09:23 AM 2010.01.21
Interview by: PK EiseltBooboo Stewart may not be a household name yet, but his star is rising quickly. Even though he’s young (he turns 16 this week), he’s already made a name for himself in Hollywood as a highly in-demand talent. In addition to acting, he’s a world champion martial artist, stunt kid, and an accomplished model with credits from H&M, Target, Nintendo Wii, and Guess just to name a few. He’s an accomplished guitarist playing lead for his band “Booboo and Fivel” and has opened for The Jonas Brothers, The Cheetah Girls and Demi Lovato. But even with early success and a steadily growing fanbase of tweens, Booboo is not content to be just a teen idol, bravely taking challenging acting roles that would make other kids his age blush. Booboo generously took some time out of his insanely busy schedule to sit down and talk to ENI about his current and upcoming projects, including a certain Vampire vs. Werewolf flick and a brand new announcement that we’re happy to say is an ENI exclusive! ENI: You’re so busy, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. BOOBOO: You’re welcome. ENI: You have so many projects in the works now, but most immediately, you have an episode of CSI Miami (Die By The Sword S8E13) that just aired, Monday the 18th. What can you tell us about that? BOOBOO: Yeah, I play a kid named Kenny Turner, it was really fun to do. We got to do a lot of action and I got to do all my own stunts, which was really great because usually there is a stunt double, but I got to do it all myself. David Caruso is really nice. Before shooting one day, he pulled me and the director into his Hummer and we listened to some music, because he wanted to set the mood. It was crazy. ENI: Since it’s already aired, can you tell me the basic story? BOOBOO: Yeah the basic outline is that my biological father gets killed, and they think it’s me. But it ends up being more complicated. This is the first time they’ve had a story that revolves around a kid which was cool. ENI: That’s exciting. Now, you’ve done a lot of stunt work right? In fact you were in Beowulf as a stunt double? BOOBOO: Yeah I was one of the stunt doubles on Beowulf, it was really great. Robert Zemeckis is really cool. It was all motion capture; we had all of these things stuck to me and a suit with sensors all over it. It took an hour and a half in makeup every morning. So I’d have to come in early and they’d put all the sensors on me. I was done up as Beowulf so that I could fight against full grown actors as the “Giant Grendel”. It was a lot of fun. ENI: You have a few movies coming out this year right? And a few last year. Of course there’s ONE that everyone knows about but are there any that you’d like to talk about that might not be getting the same attention? BOOBOO: American Cowslip, from last year was a lot of fun. Mark David the director is great to work with. I got to work with Rip Torn and Val Kilmer, and it was awesome. It was such a fun movie to do, I had a great time. ENI: And you were a hustler in that? BOOBOO: (laughs) Uh, yeah that’s a good way to put it… so that was out last summer. ENI: We’ll look for it on DVD hopefully soon. You also have “Logan” and “Smitty” coming out soon right? BOOBOO: Oh yeah, Logan I did… just because the story is so amazing.. It was such a great story that I wanted to be a part of it. It’s an anti teen suicide movie. I’m not sure when it’s due out; they are still in post production. [Official site has summer 2010 for release] ENI: And you also have Smitty coming out? This is about a troubled boy and his dog right? BOOBOO: Yeah, Smitty is directed by David Mickey Evans who directed Radio Flyer and The Sandlot. I really like his work, that’s the reason why I did it. He’s such a cool guy to work with. Also Peter Fonda and Louis Gosset Jr. were great. ENI: So already, even though you’re very young, you’ve been working with some very well respected artists. That’s impressive! You’re also listed as a producer on Logan, how do you produce a film at the age of 15? BOOBOO: (laughs) I don’t know. It was a lot of fun, you just have to go to work every day. It definitely takes a lot of discipline, but that’s what I love about it. ENI: You’re not just acting; you’re also working on music with your sisters. How's that going? BOOBOO: It’s going really well, we’re actually playing a lot. We have some new songs . We’ve been touring with Demi Levato, and Menudo… ENI: When working on your music, does the family have a set routine when it comes to writing the music? Do you each have a specific talent or job? BOOBOO: I write most of the music, but my dad usually helps with the lyrics. We like to jam together and new songs come out organically. ENI: And do you write on the guitar? BOOBOO: Yeah. ENI: But the music you play is a lot different than the stuff you listen to, right? BOOBOO: Yeah. But its getting closer, slowly. We have to be aware of our fanbase, I couldn’t play Screamo or Metallica… ENI: And this is much different than your work with T-Squad. BOOBOO: Haha, no that’s old. Actually I had a contract with Walt Disney Records for a little while, but I’ve never been on a Disney or Nickelodeon show. Which lots of people mistake…Everyone asks, which Disney show have you been on? But I’ve never really been on one… ENI: I got to see your show at Universal Citywalk last month (12/20/09), and it was fun. BOOBOO: Yeah we played our new song, “Suffocated” there. It's not out on CD yet. ENI: It was a fun show, and you seemed very accessible and generous with your time. Even though the crowd was pretty big, you had a meet and greet afterwards. The kids there were so enthusiastic. BOOBOO: We always try to meet with the fans. If they make the effort to come see us, we make the effort to spend the time after the show. We’ve actually turned down shows because we wouldn’t have been allowed to meet with the fans after. ENI: Your talent is definitely being recognized; in fact, you have a sponsorship deal with a guitar company right? BOOBOO: Yeah I’m working with Gibson guitars. They’re a sponsor, and they're really cool! I’ve been playing guitar for about 6 years now, and I love playing on the Gibsons. They have such a great sound, and you can play any style on them. ENI: So how does the sponsorship work, do you have to hold up the guitar when you go on stage or wear labels like a Nascar? BOOBOO: (Laughing) I’m just happy that I get to play their guitars on stage. ENI: Going back to the fans, have you found it more difficult to be available as you get more popular? I suspect that later this year it's going to be much, much more difficult, right? BOOBOO: (Laughs) Yeah actually recently we went to Nordstroms at the Mall and I put it on Twitter. But there was a huge crowd that ended up following us. When we left Nordstroms, it was like the whole store got up and left with us. ENI: How do you balance so many talents? From Karate, to music, to acting, do you have a strict schedule? BOOBOO: A lot of it is play it by ear, but we also have a schedule, it depends on the day. Sometimes I’ll tell a friend “yeah I’m free that day” but then that night “Aww darn, I’m not free”. Or sometimes it will clear up so you never know. ENI: How do you balance such a busy schedule with school, friends, and dating? BOOBOO: Well school, I do it all on my computer, so I can be in the car and just plug my computer in. ENI: So you never get to use the “dog ate my homework” excuse? BOOBOO: Hah, no “I’m sorry the dog ate my computer”. (Laugh) ENI: So are you dating anyone? BOOBOO: Agh! No! I’m not seeing anyone. There are so many rumors. It's strange; people say I’m dating someone, sometimes it’s a girl I’ve never even met… (Laugh) ENI: So what’s on your radar right now? What movies or music do you listen to? What inspires you? BOOBOO: Mostly I listen to rock! Screamo, Metal, Classic Rock and techno. But then movies, I like everything. I really liked UP! It’s a really good movie. Even my dad was crying. (Laughing) But then, he cried during Jerry Maguire. ENI: You’re also writing a column for TNA right? It’s an interview series with some of the top wrestlers working now. BOOBOO: Yeah, I got to interview AJ Styles. He was really cool. The first column, “15 minutes with Booboo” was posted on January 14th. ENI: How do you connect with these guys? BOOBOO: I go through TNA. I speak with the managers, which is really cool and then I get to interview them which is great. I’ve been a fan of wrestling since I was really young so its just so cool that I get to interview wrestlers. My sister does too, she does a column called “5 with Fivel”. So she asks them 5 questions, and they have to answer with whatever comes to mind first. This is all through TNA which stands for Total Non Stop Action. It’s its own wrestling company that airs on Spike TV. ENI: Is TNA affected at all by Shane McMahon’s recent resignation? BOOBOO: Oh I don’t know, WWE is a different company. But wow, why would he quit? Why would you want to step down from that job? Wow! (laughs) ENI: So do you have any heroes you’re hoping to get to talk to? BOOBOO: I want to interview The Abyss; I think that would be cool. ENI: Is that coming up on the Horizon? BOOBOO: Yeah, I hope so. The Abyss is definitely one of my favorites; we have one of his masks. My dad went as him for Halloween. ENI: You also do a lot of charity work in the Los Angeles area right? BOOBOO: Yeah, we work with “Los Angeles Mission” which is an organization that helps feed the homeless. It’s great to be involved and be able to help people out. We also work with “A Place Called Home” which helps disadvantaged youth, it's such a great feeling to help people out.ENI: That’s great! Now, you also have a designer shoe coming out from Grafeeti? BOOBOO: Yeah, it’s called the Booboo Shoe. There’s a girl version that’s pink and a guy version that’s grey and black. It's awesome, because you can draw on the shoe and then wipe it off, like a dry erase board. The sizes go up to 10 or 12. ENI: Do you draw a lot? BOOBOO: Yeah, my room is filled with drawings. My walls, my ceiling. ENI: Where do you want to be in 10 years? Where do you see your career heading? BOOBOO: I want to direct. I think that would be really cool. ENI: Great! So here’s the most important question I have for you today. BOOBOO: OK ENI: If you could be a transforming robot what would you turn into? BOOBOO: Oooh! Maybe a Rolls Royce Phantom…No, no wait – a Jet! ENI: Hahah! And as a follow up to that, some of the Twilight characters have action figures, will you be getting an action figure this year? BOOBOO: Ooh? Of me? I don’t know, but my dad actually has an action figure. It's great; I have an action of my dad in my room. But yeah, that would be crazy, that would be awesome! ENI: I know it’s still hush-hush, but can you tell me anything about Twilight Eclipse? BOOBOO: I don’t know. They’re still doing press for New Moon… But my character is Seth Clearwater, one of the werewolves. ENI: The last book, Breaking Dawn is going to be so crazy. I have no idea how they're going to adapt that…Have you read the books? BOOBOO: Yeah, I’ve read them all. ENI: Do you think the subject matter and intensity is going to cause trouble for the fans of the series? BOOBOO: I think modern teenagers all want to be older than they are, so I think it’ll be ok. ENI: So any last things you want to tell us about? BOOBOO: I’m planning on producing a short comic to be released this summer. The book will include my new EP containing 5 new songs, I’m writing one just for the comic release. Later this year, I’ll be drawing a full-length story with the character. ENI: Wow, that sounds fantastic! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us, it’s been a pleasure. BOOBOO: Thank you! ![]() We hope to catch up with Booboo in the next few months as his various projects get closer to release. Maybe even get some more juicy news on the new Comic project and Twilight: Eclipse. One thing’s for sure, this is one star to keep an eye on, because he’s just getting bigger and his momentum is growing!
