Spider-Man 2 DVD Counterfeit Ring Busted!
Reported by Outsiders - 07:13 PM 2004.07.10

Customs officials at the Johannesburg International Airport have seized 11,000 counterfeit Spider-Man 2 DVDs worth R2.7 million - and the movie only started on the big screen in South Africa today!

This was confirmed by Fred Potgieter, MD of The Southern African Federation against Copyright Theft (SAFACT), who said that a further 900 counterfeit DVDs of various film titles were also seized.

The counterfeit DVDs, flown in on a flight from Singapore, were found in two wooden containers in the cargo section.

"The imported goods," said Potgieter, "came with false import documentation, including a false declaration of goods. The documentation stated that the goods were imported by a company in Malaysia called Remax Trade". It also stated that the goods in the wooden crates were "mass metres".

"The counterfeiting of the first Spider-Man was a massive problem. It was a heavily pirated title. We believe Spider-Man 2 might fall prey to even more pirating," Potgieter said.

He applauded the "alert actions" of custom officials at the airport.
