Indiana Jones Fails To Topple Pirates For Box Office Record

The fourth INDIANA JONES is expected to fall short of America's Memorial Day weekend box office record set by JOHNNY DEPP's third PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film in 2007.

Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is expected to net $151 million ($75.5 million) from the five-day period (22-26May08) - just $2 million (£1 million) short of the Disney epic. But the adventurous archeologist's fourth outing was a clear winner at the box office for the traditional three-day weekend, claiming $101 million (£50.5 million) and becoming only the second film of 2008 to open with $100 million (£50 million) or more.

The fourth Indiana Jones film toppled The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which was a distant second at the U.S. box office raking a $23 million (£11.5 million) second weekend take. Summer blockbuster Iron Man came in third with a healthy $20 million (£10 million), taking its four-week haul to $252.3 million (£126.15 million).
