J.J. Abrams Appears On Howard Stern Show And Star Trek Box Office Perdictions Are Made
Reported by Jay Cochran - 09:32 AM 2009.05.04

J.J. Abrams Director J.J. Abrams made a surprise guest-appearance on the Howard Stern show today. During the interview, J.J. revealed to Howard that he did not think that his new Star Trek movie which opens in theatres this weekend would be able to knock Wolverine out of the #1 spot at the box office. Wolverine opened this past weekend with an estimated box office take of $87 million. It’s unclear if J.J. was just trying not to sound cocky by trying to downplay the movie some or if he knew something the rest of us did not. When asked by Howard how much J.J. would be happy with for Star Trek’s opening weekend take, he threw out the number of $50 million. Howard who admitted is a huge Star Trek fan will be seeing an advance screening of the Trek remake later today and be giving his opinion of it during tomorrow's show which airs on Sirius radio. Howard also made a box office prediction of his own for Star Trek saying it would knock Wolverine out of the #1 spot and bring in $79 million. It should be noted that Howard also said that he thought Wolverine was a great movie, but had confidence that Star Trek would be the winner for this weekend.

Having seen Star Trek myself last week and also a huge Trek fan and X-Men fan, I agree with Howard and believe this movie will do over $80 million and easily take the #1 spot at the box office this weekend. You can check out our review for Trek HERE.

Star Trek opens nationwide in theatres and IMAX on May 7, 2009.

Also bear in mind that many "non-fan" Directors of "large fandom" properties have been very well-regarded for their efforts after the fact (Bryan Singer and the first two X-Men films spring to mind...as with Christopher Nolan and the Batman/Dark Knight films). Having a "non... read more

I think the point he is trying to get across is he is someone coming in bringing a fresh new take on Star Trek. I think they are trying to break out beyond the normal Trek fan and bring in new people with this movie. Like I mentioned above, I think having something that is so well established as Tre... read more

Agreed. The manner in which he said it indicated disdain. No matter how you look at it, there is no way he should be doing press for this compared to the cast. For every vague comment that he is respectful of what has come before, he's marginalizing it and putting himself above it. If he want... read more

I can see how that might be a valid notion for the studio, but on the other hand Nemesis was seven years ago, and Nemesis and the new Star Trek are world's apart in terms of content. It's like comparing a Pinto to a Prius. This new film has been marketed extremely well. Being that T... read more

I agree with you for the most part but they did bring up a good point on the Stern show that Star Trek has been around for so long that even though this is basically a total relaunch of the franchise most people already have this pre-concieved notion about Star Trek and that people either like it or... read more

I think JJ sells himself short. Out of the big "genre" films coming out this year (Wolverine, Trek, Terminator, Harry Potter, Transformers, GIJoe, etc) I think Trek has the potential of being the biggest hit of the summer. I would say only TF2 and HP might make more money but I thi... read more
