Update: Star Trek Brings In $31 Million On Friday
Reported by Jay Cochran - 05:27 AM 2009.05.09

Chris Pine as Captain James T. KirkUpdate: Star Trek continued to show a strong showing on Friday bringing in an estimated box offce total of $31 million. This includes the $7 million from the previous Thursday evening.

J.J. Abram's new Star Trek movie from Paramount which started screenings at an estimated 3800 theatres around the country between 7pm and midnight this past Thursday beamed up an estimated box office haul of around $7 million for the night. This beats last weekend's box office winner, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" from 20th Century Fox which opened on a Thursday night to an estimated 1500 theatres and brought in around $4.5 million for that first night. Wolverine ended up with a total for its opening weekend of $85 million.

J.J. Abrams earlier this week in an interview on the Howard Stern show said he would be happy if Star Trek brought in at least 50 million for its opening weekend, however in this age of giant blockbuster movies, many consider a film of this caliber a failure if it doesn't reach somewhere closer to $100 million. The last Star Trek film, "Nemesis," which was released back in 2002 only brought in a total box-office take of around $40 million.

I just really liked how eve... read more

Star Trek did lose its' number one spot to Angels and Demons, but only barely. Angels and Demons made $48 million, Star Trek made $43 million. Overall it had a less than a 45% drop from week one to week two, which is absolutely fantastic by Hollywood summer blockbuster standards. ... read more

I see theaters are already moving it to smaller screens to shift focus to Angels & Demons. That may cut down on sales. Angels & Demons doesn't strike me as necessary to be seen on the biggest screen, but more seats=more money.
