Like it or not, Jaden Smith has a film career. And like it or not, M. Night Shyamalan still has one too. But despite our reservations, the debut trailer for Jaden and M Night's first collaborative effort "After Earth" has managed to pique our interest just enough to give them another shot. It also doesn't hurt that the futuristic movie, which also stars Jaden's father Will Smith, has the eyebrow-raising premise about a boy's journey to save his injured father after they unexpectedly crash land their spacecraft on Earth. (Earth, by the way, is now an extremely hostile jungle ever since a cataclysmic event that took place eons ago turned it into an abandoned planet.)
Though we're not sure how much M Night tooled with it, the story was conceived by videogame journalist/designer turned Hollywood scribe Gary Whitta (Book of Eli). The screenplay was then penned by Whitta and Stephen Gaghan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "Traffic." So, we're hoping there's no twisty ending, just a straight-up survival tale set 1000 years into the future.
In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
