Cable network FX is teasing their new 10-episode limited series "Fargo" with a 30-second clip that primarily shows Billy Bob Thornton scraping ice from his car windshield while the 1956 folk tune "It Only Hurts For A Little While" by The Ames Brothers plays in the background.
And while it's obviously based on Joel and Ethan Coen's critically-acclaimed 1996 feature, the upcoming cable dramedy -- which will also star a Minnesotan-accented Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, Sherlock) -- will not be repurposing the same characters, or even the same story, from the original film.
Instead, showrunner Noah Hawley (former "Bones" producer/writer) is only using the Coen Brothers' particular tone and quirky small-town atmosphere as the framework for an all-new "true crime" story set in the Minnesota area with Thornton playing the small screen equivalent of Steve Buscemi's sleazeball character and Freeman in a role that's similar to William H. Macy's aw-shucks salesman-gone-bad.
An original adaptation of the Academy Award-winning feature film, Fargo features an all-new "true crime" story and follows a new case and new characters, all entrenched in the trademark humor, murder and "Minnesota nice" that made the film an enduring classic.
Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton stars as "Lorne Malvo," a rootless, manipulative man who meets and forever changes the life of small town insurance salesman "Lester Nygaard," played by BAFTA Award-winner and Emmy-nominated Martin Freeman. Colin Hanks plays Duluth Police Deputy "Gus Grimly," a single dad who must choose between his own personal safety and his duty as a policeman when he comes face-to-face with a killer. Allison Tolman also stars as "Molly Solverson," an ambitious Bemidji deputy.
Fargo stars Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks, Allison Tolman, Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh, Glenn Howerton, Joey King, Adam Goldberg
