Marvel has announced that Patrick Brennan (Twilight Saga) has been cast to play the role of Marcus Daniels, a.k.a. Blackout in an upcoming episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He will first appear in the eighteenth episode titled “Providence,” with a bigger role in the following episode. The character first appeared in the comics back in 1976 in issue #19 of Nova. After being exposed to cosmic radiation Daniels developed the power to tap into what is know as the Darkforce, a source of infinite dark energy. Daniels could manipulate and direct this energy in various ways such as making shapes from it like discs, cubes, spheres, cylinders and turn them into projectiles. He could also open up portals to the Darkforce dimension.
In the TV series Blackout's powers will differ a bit from the comics. In the cinematic universe Daniels will be able to suck the energy out of anything around him. This is how Brennan describes the character:
This is the way they explained it to me: This guy, Marcus Daniels, a.k.a. Blackout, was shrouded in darkness, his soul, everything about him was shrouded in darkness until he comes across this Cello player. And the music was the only light that came into his soul, and it gave him hope and it gave him some sense of what light was. I thought to myself, oh my god, you don’t even need to explain anything else. Because music, to me, is what gets me through most of the time. My kids, my wife, and music. That aspect of it totally intrigued me. I thought that was quite beautiful and very interesting, that aspect of the character.
So it sounds like Blackout will have a confrontation with Phil Coulson's (Clark Gregg) over his cellist girlfriend which was recently announced would be played by actress Amy Ackers.
