Toshiba Plans To Drop HD-DVD Format
Reported by Eyehut - 01:30 PM 2008.02.17

Source: Reuters

Toshiba Corp. is planning on dropping the HD-DVD format according to a source within the company. Toshiba Corp. is one of the companies that spearheaded the development of the HD-DVD format.

"We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said the source, who asked not to be identified. He added that an official announcement could come as early as next week.

Pulling the plug on the production of HD-DVD hardware will signal the end of the format war it has been in with the technologically superior Blu-ray. Many have compared it to the VHS and Betamax format war, which the Betamax lost, despite it's superior technology. Sony Corp. was responsible for spearheading the development of the Betamax format and also currently the Blu-ray.

This comes after big-box retailers Best Buy and Wal-Mart, and online rental service Netflix announced their exclusive support for the Blu-ray format.
