Last month ENI had a chance to catch up with Smallville's newest cast member, Laura Vandervoort. Starting this season, Laura will be Clark Kent's cousin, Kara Zor-El, better known to comic book fans as Supergirl. In the second part of the interview, Laura shares her views on Smallville and Supergirl as we prepare for the season premiere on September 27 at 8 p.m. EST on the CW. ENI: What drew you to the character of Supergirl? How do you see her character developing on Smallville?
Laura: Well I have always been a tomboy and whether it was sports or school I was always and still am an overachiever. Kara/Supergirl stood for everything I believe in. She is a strong, independent woman who literally and metaphorically fights her own battles. As a second-degree black belt I felt that this role was the perfect combination of vulnerability, (being new to earth) strength and attitude. Not only am I getting to act with great actors, intense storylines and a wonderful crew but I’m also getting to do a lot of my own stunts such as flying, throwing a few punches and kicks and so on. It’s a dream role for me really. And I hope that younger girls will be able to look up to Kara and see her strength both inwards and out. She is her own girl. Time passed and I found myself working on movie of the weeks, working on the series “Instant Star” and finally doing my very first feature film “The Lookout.” Now I'm working with a network I have always wanted to work for and on such an incredible show…”Smallville.”
ENI: Smallville is a long-established show. How did it feel to join the cast as a new member?
Laura: Well I have to say I was very nervous to join such an incredible cast and crew. After six years of working together they are like their own tightly knit family. Inside jokes, friendships…this has all already been built before I arrived. However I was so pleased to find that EVERYONE, cast and crew, were extremely welcoming. They made me feel welcome right away. Tom, who I have most of my scenes with, is such a great role model for me. He is confident and very aware of the set and things going on around him. Tom makes a wonderful director and I hope he directs one of my episodes. He points things out to me and gives me suggestions regarding my scenes. He comes up with things I wouldn’t even have thought of and they are perfect! In addition, Erica is such a sweetheart and always makes sure I’m doing well. I am so relieved to find that every single person is genuine and loves what they do.
ENI: DC super heroes are known by their costumes. Will you be donning the red miniskirt and blue tights during the role?
Laura: Hahahaha. Well I have to say I have worn a blue mini skirt, I’ve worn red boots, I've worn belly tops and short shorts and I am usually always in red or blue.
ENI: Helen Slater played the title role in the Supergirl movie and is playing Kara’s aunt on Smallville. Did she give you an advice?
Laura: I actually haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Helen yet. I am so thrilled to get to work with her and honored. I’m sure she will have a few great stories for me.
ENI: A key difference between Clark and Kara is Clark’s comfort in the human world. What challenges does Kara face entering this world after years of hibernation near Smallville?
Laura Well she definitely faces the challenge of fitting in…being one of the humans. She struggles with this in several ways. One obvious one is her clothing. When she arrives she clearly does not fit in. Slowly she will find her style and comfort level, however on this journey she will go through many changes. Being a 19 year old human girl is a challenge in itself, let alone being alien and trying to become one. Kara will learn about love, boys, human traits, trust and overall what it means to be human.
ENI: Clark Kent and Lex Luthor are slowly moving from adversaries to arch-enemies. How might Kara be pulled into this developing relationship?
Laura: Again, this I cannot answer, as I am not sure. Kara does have Lex after her trying to get her to tell him who she is and where she is from, however with tensions possibly rising between Clark and Kara and their differences and different points of view….Kara just may fall into Lex’s hands….but that’s just me guessing.
ENI: Can we expect to see Kara team up with Green Arrow and the other members of the Justice League this season?
Laura: This question I cannot answer, not because I’m sworn to secrecy but because I literally don’t know. I only truly know what’s happening from one episode to another. Keeps it interesting for me. :)
ENI: Finally, who do you think would win in a one-on-one fight? Supergirl or Wonder Woman?
Laura: SUPERGIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…Why? BECAUSE SHES “SUPERGIRL!”
Thanks again to Laura for taking the time to talk with us and be sure to check out her debut on Smallville this Thursday September 27 at 8 p.m. EST on the CW.
