Rocko's Modern Life Season 1

Reviewed by Blitz-Wing - Mon June 20, 2011

After 18yrs of waiting, fans of the wallaby in the blue shirt can rejoice as Shout Factory releases Rocko's Modern Life Season 1 on a 2-DVD set. Season 1 encompasses the first 13 episodes of the cartoon, including all 26 segments.

Mixing double-entendre and adult tongue-in-cheek humor with simple animation, Rocko appealed to kids and adults alike. Part of the show's charm is accredited to creator Joe Murray's decision not to hire establish cartoon writers. Instead, he looked for talent that wasn't already in the animation circle. Many of the contributors from Rocko went on to develop another big NickToon, Spongebob Squarepants.

Season 1 introduces you to Rocko as well as the other fine citizens of O-Town. It contains many of the classic episodes that gave Rocko his following, and since Joe Murray bought back the rights, there is none of the censoring that Nickelodeon enforced later in the series. All the episodes are in the traditional 4:3 academy framing. You will notice some tape warble on the sides, showing the analog roots of the masters. However, the picture itself is very clear and the sound is flawless. Unfortunately, you won't find any special features with the DVDs. At a $19.99 MSRP, it's forgivable. For those who want to view 1990s animation at it's creative peek, look no further.
