The man who brought us the original Alien, Ridley Scott, is back to answer some of the questions left open by the classic sci-fi film.

Set as a prequel to Alien, the events of this movie take place in 2096 where we find a pair of scientists, Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) on a quest to discover the origins of human life. To do this, they team up with the Wayland Corporation who funds their expedition to a distant planet where they hope to find the answers to questions man has been asking since the beginning of time.

The movie very much has the look and feel of the original Alien movie, and to some extent that might be why this is only a good movie opposed to a great one. Basically, there is not a whole lot new here. Scott seems to use the same formula for this movie that he had for Alien which back when he did Alien was a new and fresh thing, but now it’s been done a million times in movies. As you’re watching this movie, you can almost see what happens before it actually does. Going in I thought I was going to be scared like I was when I saw the original Alien, but I really wasn’t. The undisputed star of the movie was Michael Fassbender who plays the android David, and does a great job. If they ever decided to remake Star Trek: The Next Generation, Fassbender would be a great candidate for a new Data.

The movie does finally give us some answers to questions alien fans have been asking since the original movie first debuted, however some of those answers aren’t entirely clear and of course it also asks new ones.

If you are a fan of the Alien movies, then you will definitely want to check this movie out. However, if you are expecting something new or mind blowing here then I am afraid you might come away a little disappointed.

Oh and be sure to stay through the end of the credits for a bonus scene.
