Journeyman Season 1: 0102 - Friendly Skies

It has been a week since Dan’s time-traveling escapades, but he goes to get an MRI to find out if there’s anything wrong with him and what may be causing the headaches he gets before his traveling happens.

Afterwards, they are off for a plane ride to a bed and breakfast to do a little family expansion – baby-making style. During the ride, Dan goes into the bathroom and starts having a headache. Before you know it, a flash, and he’s on ‘70s-era plane where everything is smoky and loud with female flight attendants dressed extraordinarily colorful.

Blending in, he takes a seat next to a woman named Diana Bloom, whom we believe to be his mission for the episode. Conveniently, her water breaks at that time and Mr. Vassar helps her deliver her baby - a daughter by the name of Tana.

While Dan is doing a great deed in the past, Katie is in a pickle in the present. The plane is getting turned around due to Dan’s disappearance and Katie’s stall for time. Desperate for help, she texts Jack. Dan returns to the present just in time to help bail Katie out of the holding room in the airport by saying that he stepped off of the plane before it took off. Jack is unhappy that he came out to the rescue to only be rendered useless.

In his travels in the 80’s, Dan once again sees Diana. Diana thanks him for all he has done for her but is upset that Tana keeps asking to know who her father is and to maybe even meet him, despite her reluctance. Dan tries to convince her to tell Tana, or she may wind up resenting Diana for it.

Dan encounters Tana after her mother’s death, who is now an art student. She is looking for the father she never knew anything about other than that she was his secretary. When Dan is able to help get them together, he rejects her as his daughter. The man explains that to keep Diana quiet about who her supposed father was, he gave her some money to keep her quiet. Before leaving, he gives her some money and tells her to buy some arts supplies.

Dan later encounters Tana’s father on an airplane, where he has cancer and requires chemo therapy and a bone marrow transplant. Dan find Tana to tell her about her father, who is now hanging around with a drug dealer. Tana is reluctant at first, but before he could see it through, he has to run from his brother - who was a patrolman at that time - for using a “fake” $20 bill (it was a current one). He escapes with an oblivious Tana as she picks him up to take her to the hospital.

At the hospital, she agrees to get tested to see if she is a match for him because her mother brought her up that way. We also run into a Billy Marble, who turns out to be the ultimate goal for Dan’s adventure this week. While Tana’s was not a match for the father (who later dies), she was a match for Billy Marble. Talk about keeping the viewers guessing.

The not-so-dead fiancé Livia once again appears during Dan’s travels. In her first appearance, she instructs him to find out-of-date currency as well as an out-of-date cell phone so he can operate undetected. Her second appearance is on the plane where she tells him to sit across the aisle from Tana’s father. However, it seems that Livia does not know anything about Dan’s life in the present other than that he is married due to his ring.

It seems that Katie has become more of a believer of Dan’s traveling technique, regardless of how he does it. Due to his disappearance from an airplane several thousand feet in the air, it is kind of hard to doubt his time traveling stories now.

However, Dan finds that Katie brought birth control pills on their baby-making trip. This upsets Dan leading him to believe that she does not believe in their marriage. Dan later does agree that they are not ready for another baby just yet.

This episode leads to a little more revelation regarding the demise of Jack and Katie’s relationship. It turns out Jack is still unhappy after all these years for Katie marrying Dan instead of Jack. Katie reminds Jack that she did not leave him for Dan indicating that something else happened before their split. To add insult to injury, Dan later calls Jack to look after Zack because they want to go to a spa for the weekend. He reluctantly agrees.

It seems that Dan can better control where and when he teleports away, while he cannot delay it for that long. Couple of times during the episode, he has walked away from a large group of people to travel back.

Finally, due to Dan’s supposed walking-off-the-plane incident, they have been put on a no-fly list, so they drive their destination. On the drive there, Dan reveals to Katie that the MRI has detected nothing wrong.
