Journeyman: Double Down

Journeyman Season 1: Double Down

So this episode was basically two disparate episodes. One took place in the past and one in the present, only briefly intersecting each other. This episode further delves into how Dan and Katie came together only slightly after Livia’s “death,” as well as backlash from the Dylan McClean money continuing to haunt the Vassar family.

The Past
First, let’s talk the past. Dan, except for the first two minutes or so of the episode, stays entirely in the year 1999.

While taking out the recycling cans in the present, he teleports into a man’s car who turns out to be a federal witness for a triad case. An attempt on his life is made by two Asian men affiliated with the triad, but Dan comes to the rescue. However, a badge that Dan was wearing is dropped, leading them to track Dan down to his apartment.

Present Dan arrives at his 1999 apartment to find it trashed by one of the gang members, but it is all made well again thanks to Livia showing up. Livia lets Dan know that the federal witness is no longer the guy he is helping but rather he now has to keep 1999 self safe from the triad.

That particular night has 1999 Dan going to gamble away money. This is, coincidentally, also when Katie and Dan find out that they were meant for each other. However, this time around, it’s different. To keep 1999 Dan safe when he leaves the illegal poker games to get more money, Dan and Livia wait around for him. When Present Dan finds that the triad members are out to kill 1999 Dan, he engages in a fight with himself. Present Dan prevails over 1999, dead drunk Dan, and they take him back to his apartment and put him to bed.

There is a twist, though. Since after that night Katie and Dan got together, Present Dan must return to the illegal poker room and drop enough money to lure Katie there. If he doesn’t his present family will never be. To further compound that predicament: the $20,000 that Dan had stashed away in 1999 was stolen by the triad member who ransacked his apartment.

Livia to the rescue, though. While they strategize, she travels away and into Dan’s house in the present. She discovers his house as well as pictures of Zack, Katie and Dan’s son. She finds the Dylan McClean cash and returns back to save Dan. Mission to lure Katie to 1999 Dan and start a family is accomplished. Although the question must be asked of what repercussions of Present Dan gambling again will there be? Will he fall into the hole of gambling again?

The Present
The present for Katie was very tumultuous. First, Katie continues her journey towards getting a job. She attempts to take to Dan about the job, but Dan disappears for the rest of the episode into 1999.

Her old coworker (who happens to be the firing pin of getting Dan and Katie together in 1999) from Channel 6 news calls her up, as he now has the power to hire journalists, and expresses interest in bringing her back. They have lunch the next day, and even though Katie and Dan did not thoroughly discuss her return to work, she agrees to the position of becoming a broadcaster again.

Katie is also faced with the issue of the Dylan McClean money for the second time in two weeks. When they have when Dan and Katie are at one of Dan’s work-related functions, Zack volunteers to Jack the location of where they stashed the Dylan McLean money. You can’t blame him, though, the kid was hungry, and Jack did not have any money at the time. Jack being vigilant of Dan’s recent shadiness, takes a huge notice. He takes one of the $100 bills he finds in the stack and takes it to get verified.

It turns out the bill is from the Dylan McClean case in 1975, which we already knew. The federal suit comes in and asks Jack where he got it from. Jack is coy with the information and lies that it is part of one of his cases. Jack tells him he will do some digging and give him back information.

To grill Katie and Dan, Jack shows up unannounced at their home and goes to the closet where the money is hidden. Livia, who has traveled to the present in this timeframe, rushes to find the cash and disappears just in time before Jack barges into the closet. Jack, angry that Katie continues to hold back information regarding Dan’s situation, tells Katie “I’m done,” and storms out.

To make things more difficult for Jack, the federal man revisits him and demands all of his files regarding the case he working on. At this point, Jack wrestles with the decision, and eventually tells the fed that he got the bill from his brother.

Divesting the information that Jack has, he seems to have started a huge snowball for this Dylan McClean money. The previews for next week’s episode looks to be a tough one for the Vassar family.

While I’ve been having some gripes the past weeks about Livia not getting enough screen time nor any back story, her major play this episode gives me some sort of satisfaction. For now. The character of Livia still revolves around Dan’s actions and while I understand the reasoning, giving more information on a very important character will give the viewers some satisfaction.

Also, Livia seems to possess somewhat control of her powers to travel (as was shown when she traveled before Jack saw her. She definitely has a better way of staying on topic and not going of tangents as Dan seems to enjoy doing so much.

Overall, this episode gives a large bulk of how Dan and Katie came to be, and at the same time, created a lot of problems for them, too. Jack has had enough of the two covering for each other in what he thinks is some odd business, which he has no reason not to think so. The question is, will he ever find out? Or will he continue to put up road blocks in the life of the Vassar family?
