Heroes: Truth or Consequences

Reviewed by maroon5gurl88 - Tue November 27, 2007

We’re one episode away from the Heroes season finale (damn writer’s strike) and I must say I’m glad it’s done. It just has lost what made it so special and hopefully, at least according to Tim Kring, next season will start fresh and return to its original splendor. This episode was decent but that’s about it, overall, as usual, nothing special.

Adam/Kensei and Peter continue on their search for the Shanti virus meeting the final Company member Victoria Pratt. Adam shows his true motivations when he murders Victoria, but of course Peter remains oblivious. Hiro travels back to the 70’s when his father first locked up Adam and ends the episode in confrontation with Peter at Primatech Paper. Claire mourns the loss of Noah, who we see is resurrected, and vows war on Elle. Mohinder sets out to destroy the Shanti virus along with all the other strains with Bob. Sylar and Maya solidify their relationship, resulting in Alejandro’s death, and Sylar reentering Mohinder’s life. Micah and Monica team up to retrieve a stolen backpack to potentially deadly results.

There was a lot to enjoy about this episode I will say that. I love seeing Adam’s past along with seeing more of his dastardly deeds. The character has been fleshed out perfectly and he’s really become the new main baddie. I did like the flashbacks to the Company in the 70’s, I have always said I like the “Watchmen” stance the show has taken this season so it was great to see a young Kaito and Victoria. I have to say my favorite story this episode was….Sylar and Maya! Yes I know I’ve shown my distaste for the “Wonder twins” but this episode was their time to shine. It was great seeing Maya grow so close to Sylar, and him manipulating her every step of the way. The final confrontation with Alejandro and Sylar was spectacular and who didn’t love a shirtless Zachary Quinto…I know that one was for the ladies. And who didn’t love when he was petting Molly and telling Mohinder “I’ll take care of the little one…” that was a chill worthy moment.

Sadly the story arcs that fell flat really drug down the episode. Watching Claire cry for the better half of the show got old quick. It wasn’t until her stare down with Elle (who did not get enough screen time in my opinion) that I really got involved. Peter is slowly becoming the new Claire, or the character I cringe when I see. He’s become so unemotional and monotone (which I’ll go into more in the acting discussion) that I’m tuning out whenever he’s on. The worst story arc was definitely Micah and Monica. The whole sidebar with the backpack and the medal was so cliché and boring and I just knew it wasn’t going to end well. It made me gag to see that Monica gets kidnapped by gang bangers; it just screamed “cheese.”

The acting just seemed sub par this episode. Milo Ventimiglia has become so monotone this season that he’s turning into Josh Hartnett almost. Every time he’s on I just tune out because he’s so emotionless. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Hayden Panetierre as Claire. She cried almost the entire episode and she still has that scrunched up facial expression…doing both is not a good look. I do have to give some shoutout’s to Kristen Bell as Elle. When she’s itching her cast and saying “It itches like a mother” made me laugh out loud. David Anders as Adam is so amazing. He’s bringing back great memories of Sark from “Alias.” And I loved Dania Rameriez (shocker) and Zachary Quinto together. Their chemistry was so spot-on.

The stories that worked were amazing and the stories that sucked, sucked hard. That’s really the best way to describe “Truth or Consequences” this week. Next week, being the finale, will close a long, difficult chapter in the Heroes canon. One that just reeked of disappointment. After the finale I’m hoping to post an overall review of the season. I give this episode 4 out of 5.
