True Blood - Cold Ground

Reviewed by maroon5gurl88 - Mon October 13, 2008

The Story: In the aftermath of Gran Stachouse’s death Sookie tries to stay sane which isn’t helped by hearing the thoughts of the residents of Bon Temps who blame her for Gran’s death. Jason’s sanity is also tested as he struggles through a growing addiction to V juice. Tara attempts to help Sookie but turns to Sam for comfort. Bill and Sookie’s relationship takes a huge leap forward and Tara’s relationship with her mother faces a demon of sorts.

Pros: “Cold Ground” is the episode where the huge arcs are set up that will propel the rest of the season forward. Each character struggles with something that will ultimately lead them to the finale and relationships are solidified for better or worse. This episode really isn’t as showy or humorous as past episodes but what we get is some amazing acting and character interaction. Gran’s death is the focal point that causes all the characters to face their demons and star Anna Paquin shows the greatest range as she goes through the gamut of emotions. A pivotal scene where she eats a pecan pie and finally grieves for her grandmother was particularly touching and you just ache for her character with every bite. Rutina Wesley also does a tremendous job as Tara in her back and forth struggle on whether to help her mother exorcise a demon that might not be there. I’ve loved the relationship between Tara and her mother since it began and it’s great that it’s finally being explored. This relationship is all about dealing with an alcoholic parent and the way Tara is forced to face her mother, the audience also has to decide whether to believe the mother’s story or just assume it’s the alcohol. I can see some brilliant storylines coming out of this plot. Another great addiction subplot that should be explored throughouly deals with Sookie’s brother Jason and his growing addiction to vampire blood. Think of the metaphor however you want but it’s an addiction subplot that is smoldering quite well. Ryan Kwanten has the great look of a soon to be addict and I can see his character have a spectacular fall.

Cons: None of these cons impacted my love of this episode but it is a far darker tone than past episodes. Where every past episode has been a dark comedy this episode is just dark. Not only do you get hit with the subject of death but there are two addiction plots. The romance between Bill and Sookie takes a huge leap that might make viewers wonder where things are going and it might not be the best direction. Again, I thought this episode was amazing but it is very somber, no laughs or quippy one-liners.

Overall: True Blood does an expert job at mixing drama and comedy but “Cold Ground” shows how well creator Alan Ball and his team do at a drama. I’ve never seen his past show “Six Feet Under” but I think this episode makes me want to take a look. I give it a 5/5.
