The Story: Olivia continues to see her old partner/lover John Scott wherever she goes, but what she thinks are hallucinations turn into more when it seems John is leading her to something. Peter, Walter and Olivia look investigate an elevator crash that might be linked to a doctor doing experiments on people. Masked as a way to boost confidence the doctor seems to be “activating” people with electromagnetic powers.
Pros: You have to love when Fringe goes gory and “Power Hungry” has a few great gore moments like a beating heart being reactivated and a man getting his arm shredded in a machine. The story this episode also moves forward and really humanizes Olivia. Up until this point Olivia has seemed to be tough as nails but at the end of the episode when she’s given John’s files meant for her you really see her as a person. I love the whole plot of whether John is good or bad and hopefully that will continue to be fresh. I also love how Astrid, the girl assistant is getting a bigger role along with Kirk Acevedo as Charlie Francis. You really are starting to notice their around more and I love them. The pigeon plan that Walter concocted was a particular favorite of mine since it just seemed so out of place. And Walter continues his run of drinking things throughout every episode, this week he milks their guinea pig Gene (who is a cow) and gets some fresh off the farm milk.
Cons: I liked this episode but it just seemed…typical. There weren’t any huge things that were shocking. The episode was good, but just that, it all seemed pretty formulaic and standard. I didn’t get enough of my Peter and Walter squabbling that I’ve come to enjoy and the whole subplot with John being real or fake just seemed a bit too much like what’s going on in the “Heroes” universe. The plotline was good but I just felt it wasn’t up to what it used to be. The scenes for next week look like we’ll be back up and running.
Overall: “Power Hungry” just wasn’t memorable for me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this episode but I just didn’t see it as up to the Fringe standards we’ve come to expect. I give the episode a 3/5 but that’s only because I was a bit disappointed.
