The Story: Sookie reveals a dark secret about her past. Bill is confronted with his former friends who threaten the group at Merlotte’s leading to dire consequences. Jason goes deeper into his addictions with vampire blood, pawning off his grandmother’s jewelry, but finds comfort in another addict. Tara, still skeptical about her mother’s “demon,” pays for an exorcism.
Pros: This episode just keeps the train moving and it’s riveting from beginning to end. The reappearance of the vampire Eric, in a small cameo this episode, along with Bill’s past friends is heading for some amazing results. I loved the introduction to the seamy vampire world before but it’s slowly being fleshed out and I want more. I’m also continuing to love the side storylines this season. Jason meets Amy, played brilliantly by Lizzy Caplan, this episode and it will be interesting to see how the tale of these two vampire addicts plays out. The exorcism plotline finally got me really interested as you continue to wonder whether poor Tara is being taken for a ride. The audience also starts to question Bill’s motives when he does something in Sookie’s “honor” that might make you wonder whether this Southern gentleman is anything but.
Cons: I did have a big issue this episode and that’s that everyone is scattered. You tend to have a storyline or two that cross paths with another and this one just made everyone go off on their own. It wasn’t a big deal because I loved the individual stories but it did make the group dynamic less effective. This episode continues to be the Jason and Tara story as Sookie gets slowly relegated to the back. It’s slowly starting to become noticeable when she isn’t in the front seat. I’m also on the fence on whether I enjoyed Sookie’s dark secret or not. I understand where the story is going with it but it just felt like a bit of a cop-out.
Overall: True Blood continues to grip me and “Burning House of Love” continues to flesh out some amazing stories but is the execution getting a bit muddled? I’ll be sure to check it out next week but in the meantime this episode gets a 3.5/5.
