If you are an “uber ” Star Wars fan then you might find a few things to laugh about in this movie, otherwise I would probably recommend you pass on this one. I guess you could compare the movie to “Free Enterprise” (Star Trek), although “Free Enterprise” balanced the focus on Star Trek with a more realistic view of the fans with a light touch of comedy. “Fan Boys” focuses on nothing but Star Wars and portrays fans in the most unflattering stereotypical manner. Oh, and both have William Shatner in it.
The story in “Fanboys” is a simple one, a group of misfit geeks who live, eat, and breathe everything Star Wars, who set out to steal a copy of the yet-to-be released Episode I movie from George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch. Along the way, they confront Trekkies portrayed as stereotypically anti-Star Wars geeks themselves as well as many guest stars from the Star Wars universe like Carrie Fisher, Billy-Dee Williams and Ray Parks. I think the funniest scene in the movie comes at the end as the friends await the beginning of Episode I on opening day. One of the friends suddenly asks another, “What if the movie sucks?”
Kristen Bell is definitely the shining star in this movie and seeing her in the Slave Leia outfit at the end almost makes the entire movie worth watching.
If you missed this one in the theatres (which isn’t surprising as it didn’t have a very wide release) and you are a big Star Wars fan, then I would say it is probably worth renting one night to check out, but otherwise I wouldn’t bother with it. As for the extra features on the DVD, they aren’t really anything great. Most the segments become repetitive as they explain how they really made this for Star Wars fans – a moment of yeah, no duh.
