Hard to believe that it's been 20yrs since the yellow skinned ones have graced our TV sets. Even harder to believe, it's been almost 9yrs since Season 12 was first aired. In a now seemingly annual tradition, Fox has released the 12th season of the Simpsons. This season's box art is dedicated to Comic Book Guy. As with the last few seasons, you have the choice of a 'puffy' limited edition box or the more traditional DVD box, which depicts Comic Book Guy bursting out of his shirt and tie to reveal a "Season 12" costume. Wait, CBG in a tie?
The interior features a foldout with artwork on both sides. The theme is a comic book convention (what else?) where The Simpsons and other Springfielders can be seen checking out the various booths. The 4 DVDs are tucked away inside each of the panels. Each DVD is imaged in comic book panel style, featuring Homer (posing as Radioactive Man), Marge (in her own costume getup), Lisa (aka Clobber Girl from Treehouse of Horror X) and Bart (bursting through a Radioactive Man poster wearing his Bartman guise).
The episode guide contained with the set is also done up comic book style, including the forward from creator Matt Groening made up as an ad. As for the discs themselves, every episode features optional commentary from various sources. You can also check out deleted scenes (on all but three episodes), original sketchwork, original Fox commercials for the episodes and a documentary from animators. There is even a section devoted to the Simpsons' fandom.
There are a couple of classic nuggets buried within the set. One, Homr (backwards R) was an emmy winner for 2000. Other classics include "A Trilogy of Errors" and "Worst... Episode... Ever" (hey, it's the theme for Season 12, so why not?). The remainder of the set is standard Simpsons fare, with the usual hi-jinx (Sideshow Bob plotting to kill Bart/Krusty, Treehouse of Horror XI, Homer's scheming, etc). For the avid Simpsons fan, this might not be the best set available but is still very much worth owning.
