Night at the museum

Reviewed by Kit4na - Wed January 31, 2007

The basic plot revolves around Stiller (Surprised?) trying to prove to his ex-wife and son that he can be both a good father and a valued member of society by, wait for it…. getting a job! He is given a position as night watchman of the local Museum and soon finds out that his responsibilities are slightly more than he expected as when night-time falls over the museum, all of the exhibits come to life!

The action comes thick and fast in this feature, so much so, that you can't help but watch with sheer excitement to see what the next museum attraction is going to do when they 'wake'. Characters include a full size skeleton T-Rex, a tribe of cavemen, Attila the Hun, Teddy Roosevelt and a mischievous monkey named 'Dexter'.

I have to say, in a world were even children's films seem to be more geared towards adults, this picture is a rare gem of a 'family film'. It has elements of comedy, suspense, romance and the occasional fright, all whilst managing to engage its audience no matter what the age group. Ben Stiller gives an excellent performance and is very believable in his role. The real stars of this one however, are the support appearances. Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais and Owen (No Ben Stiller movie would be the same without him!) Wilson all give superbly funny performances in their respective roles and help gel what essentially could have been a total flop into one of the best 'Feel Good' films of 2006.

The direction and cinematography keep the film well paced and looking great throughout, and lest we forget, the special effects are also very good for a movie of this calibre.

I went into this film with little or no expectations of being entertained and I came out with a smile on my face and pleasantly surprised at what I had just seen. I recommend you watch this film, and watch it with the whole family. It will definitely be a laugh!
