The Losers is based on a comic book title from DC Comics’ Vertigo line which goes by the same name, and tells the story of a crack commando team of military specialists who get sent on a mission that quickly goes bad thanks to the manipulations of a rogue CIA spook out for his own interests. After getting screwed over by this villain, the team sets out for revenge.
The best way I can describe The Losers is a movie based on a comic book dealing with non-comic book like characters trying to be just a little too comic bookish. The overall story was pretty generic, and the villains were a bit over the top bordering on campiness. The heroes gelled pretty well together although they seemed to try to push the comedic moments just a bit too much at times.
The Losers wasn’t the worst movie I have ever seen or even the worst comic book adaptation, and certainly it was chocked full of lots of good action scenes and comedic moments, some of which were actually funny. I think that they went just a little too far with the over-the-top cliché type plot and characters, especially when it came to the bad guys. If you are going to the movies and want to see a really good comic book based movie, then go see Kick-Ass or wait until Iron Man 2 comes out in a little over the week. If you already saw Kick-Ass last week and want something to tide you over until Iron Man, then you could probably do worse than The Losers.
