Angela Kinsey and Ed Helms Talk Love on The Office
Reported by Kristen - 11:59 PM 2008.11.07

Love triangles always make for good television. They allow the audience to pick sides and connect with the characters based on the present situation. The hit NBC series “The Office” is no stranger to love triangles but this season they are taking it in a different direction with a love triangle filled with hilarity. The triangle involves resident eccentric Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and couple Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey) and Andy Bernard (Ed Helms). ENI had an opportunity to talk to Kinsey and Helms about their story this season along with their experiences working on the show and what it’s been like to play these crazy characters.

It always interesting to hear actors talk about their total admiration for the show they work for, their passion for their characters and how they are truly fans themselves. Angela Kinsey and Ed Helms really are fans of “The Office” and love discovering the crazy antics of the upcoming episodes. Ed Helms discussed how exciting it is going to the table reads, where the cast rehearses the script for the first time, and find out what the writers have planned. Helms says, “There’s something we share in the excitement and anticipation for what’s [going to] happen.” He mentions the “trust and admiration” the entire cast has for the amazing writing staff and Kinsey furthered that point by saying she leaves the table reads “in awe.” The actors also find themselves incredibly fortunate to have come into such an amazing show as Helms stated “I feel so lucky to be a part of The Office. It’s so fun, so consistently.” The actor also praised the shows ability to blend the comic with the reality of working in a real office environment, something Kinsey can agree with.

Angela Kinsey’s time before the show is nothing short of comic in itself, once being an operator for 1-800-DENTIST. She says “I had to work with people I probably wouldn’t hang out with socially.” In playing her crazy character she has been able to work off her past experiences by making her character real and “prickly” but in her own way, “I try to find the hills and valleys in her.” When asked if she has ever been in the midst of an office romance, something this season is dealing with she had a humorous story to tell. Kinsey explains, “I was asked out…but it was awkward I had to work with that person everyday. Then it was like he wants to smooch me, then I had to go and see him everyday at work.” While she doesn’t know where her character is heading in terms of this current romance she does equate Angela Martin to a buffet, “there’s so much happening with her.” In listening to Kinsey’s stories, how much of Angela Martin is like her? She says that every actor tries to bring “a bit of themselves” and her tendency to organize comes through in Angela making the actress conclude “Oh Angela Martin would do that.”

Ed Helm’s character Andy also has a touch of the actor coming through. Helms says he discovered so much about Andy to love and “there’s a lot of me in him.” When asked how he decides what fits with Andy’s personality he explains, “The things that I’m ashamed of, I just blow out of proportion for Andy. Or the things I’m insecure about I make the biggest parts of Andy.” He also praises his characters “unflappable optimism. Once he decides that’s what he wants…he throws his whole heart into it.”

The relationship between Andy and Angela has been described by Helms as “largely horrifying” for their wild antics but the actor just equates that to a working relationship, “what might work for one couple would be horrifying to another couple.” Kinsey says the two will continue to bring out “each other’s crazy” in this season with their triangle involving Dwight. When asked how the love triangle will play out, Kinsey says fans can expect a lot saying “There’s so much that’s going to unfold over the coming episodes that’s been so amazing to play.”

Actor Ed Helms says he’s not sure if Andy and Dwight will come to blows for the love of Angela but Kinsey puts it perfectly in what Angela sees in each man. She says, “there’s part of Angela Martin that would do what society thinks would be appropriate. She can bring Andy to church; I don’t think she could bring Dwight to church. Andy on paper is what she wanted…she has this crazy chemistry with Dwight she doesn’t understand…. Andy’s so accommodating to all her needs and Dwight is more in her face but maybe she’s more exhilarated by that.” In the end it comes to down to “the person she thinks is more appropriate and the person she has a deep passion for.”

In the end both actors say their characters have a deep love for the other but Kinsey theorizes Angela has “blinders on.” Both said this season is jam packed with fun and craziness that fans will not be able to get enough of. Helms puts the relationship between their characters perfectly when he said “Anyone who knows our couple is probably [saying] ‘What the hell is going on here?” Fans can ask that question and see the answer when The Office airs Thursdays on NBC.
