Maniac - Theatrical Trailer And New Movie Poster

Reported by Outsiders - 2013.05.22

True, the slasher genre is a tired one. But director Franck Khalfoun (P2) and producers Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur (Piranha 3D, High Tension) are upping the ante a bit for their modern-day remake of William Lustig's 1980 cult shocker, "Maniac." First off, the team got Elijah Wood to star as Frank, the demented mannequin store owner whose disturbing mother issues has produced a murderous mind for women -- he strolls the streets at night and hunts down innocent-looking victims with a razor-sharp knife at his side. (Frodo has never looked so evil.) Aside from setting the film in Los Angeles (the original was set in gritty 80s New York), director Khalfoun decided to add his twist by shooting the entire movie through the eyes of Elijah's serial killer character.

Is a POV-shot horror more effective than, say, your standard don't-look-around-the-corner thriller? Well, going by the newly-released U.S. trailer, the style definitely gives off a gloomy mood of paranoia. Why don'tcha take look and judge for yourself, it's posted above. But a word of advice, "please don't scream." Creepy Elijah doesn't seem to like that much.

A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in the present day, MANIAC is a reboot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made. Frank (Elijah Wood, in a tour de force performance) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates and the number of victims increases, it becomes clear that Frank is far more dangerous than he seems. With a pulsating electronic score by Rob, the film is an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiraling nightmare of a killer and his victims.

Maniac stars Elijah Wood, Nora Arnezeder
